Understanding the Differences Between 5G mmWave and Sub-6 5G

As the world embraces the era of 5G, it is important to understand the benefits mmWave (millimeter wave) brings to the table and how it enhances the 5G experience. To do this, one must first understand the underlying differences between 5G’s two primary frequency bands: mmWave and Sub-6 (below 6 GHz).

In this blog, we explore some of the key benefits of mmWave compared to Sub-6 in the context of 5G. We then discuss how you can learn more through the Qualcomm Academy 5G training programs.

Key Benefits of 5G mmWave Compered to Sub-6 5G

  • Higher Frequency Range: mmWave operates in the frequency range of 24 GHz to 300 GHz. These high-frequency waves offer vast bandwidth, which can enable faster data transmission rates. Sub-6, meanwhile, operates at frequencies below 6 GHz, typically ranging from 600 MHz to 6 GHz.
  • Ultra-Fast Data Speeds and Lower latency: Due to its wide bandwidth, mmWave can offer exceptional data speeds, potentially reaching multi-gigabit per second (Gbps) rates. This can make it ideal for applications that demand ultra-fast data transfer, such as high-definition video streaming and virtual reality. Sub-6 offers much lower bandwidth, ranging from hundreds of megabits per second (Mbps) to a few gigabits per second (Gbps), depending on the specific frequency band.
  • More Suitable for High-Density Areas: mmWave can thrive in high-density environments compared to Sub-6 5G because of mmWave’s increased capacity, faster speeds, and lower interference due to shorter range and narrower beams.
  • Improving Fixed Wireless Access (FWA): Compared to Sub-6 5G, mmWave can enhance FWA by increasing capacity and allowing for more simultaneous connections on one network. This can mean a better user experience for businesses with dozens or even hundreds of employees connecting to the same network at once. 5G mmWave can also help wireless operators providing FWA service generate cost savings between 5% and 20% when using an indoor 5G mmWave network.
